Speaking with Alpha News, Serbian political scientist Stevan Gajic commented on the prospects of Armenia’s European integration. According to the expert, the EU does not view Armenia as a potential member but rather as a tool to counter Russia.

“The European Union, that is, the European Commission, is at war with Russia. Any country that has been, in any way, within Russia’s sphere of influence is of particular importance to the EU to make an enemy of Russia out of it. Therefore, under Pashinyan, this was very successfully implemented with Armenia, and most importantly, it hit Armenian interests hard. Armenia is not needed as a member of the European Union, it is needed only as a tool. Armenia, of course, will never be in the European Union, because the EU itself is falling apart, but this is absolutely unimportant in terms of European politics.

Armenians will be told that paradise on earth awaits them in the European future, but, of course, this is a big lie, a big deception. And if Armenia, willingly or unwillingly, goes this way, it will pay a heavy price, just as Serbia has. We have been paying a heavy price for 30 years now for the European path, about which no one asked us, never, no referendum was held. Most likely, Armenians will not vote in any referendum either. Armenia is needed as a means, not an end. Armenia is not important to Europe as a political union, it is important only as a point on the geographical map where the interests of Russia and potentially Iran can be thwarted,” Gajic said.

According to the expert, Armenia is also important for the EU in the event of a possible war between the US and Iran.

“Now signs of a possible war between America and Iran are appearing. And, of course, Armenia is important in this regard because it is nearby and has been an ally of Iran for the past few decades. Therefore, geopolitically, Armenia is important as a means that must first be neutralized and, in the best case, turned against both Russia and Iran. This is the main reason why the European Union is sending such political messages to Armenia,” Gajic concluded.
