Eugen Schmidt: Even if the EU introduces sanctions against Azerbaijan, they will be quite limited
Eugen Schmidt, Member of the Bundestag, commented to Alpha News on the disagreements between the European Union and Azerbaijan.
According to the expert, the EU is trying to use various levers of pressure to ensure that Azerbaijan pursues the policy that the EU considers beneficial.
“The EU is now putting pressure on Azerbaijan in various ways. It is trying to use various levers of pressure to ensure that Azerbaijan pursues the policy that the EU considers beneficial. But the EU doesn’t succeed. Obviously, Azerbaijan is pursuing its nationally oriented policy in its own interests, that is, without any regard for Europe. And, of course, many people in Europe don’t like it. Over the past decades, they have become used to the fact that many countries obey their orders. Those European politicians are now somewhat discouraged and not entirely happy with how the unipolar world order is breaking down and something else is taking its place,” Schmidt said.
According to Schmidt, European forces would not want Azerbaijan to fall into the hands of Iran and Russia.
“Europe is currently trying to put pressure on Azerbaijan, there is some kind of scheming trade going on, but in my opinion, the chances of introducing very tough sanctions are low. After all, there is Turkiye that stands behind Azerbaijan. European forces would not want Azerbaijan to fall into the hands of Iran and Russia, so they will not push it away completely. Again, Azerbaijan is an energy supplier, and now Europe has a problem with this, so I don’t think there will be sanctions. And if they do, they will be quite limited,” Schmidt concluded.
