Armenia and the EU signed an agreement on the status of the EU mission in Armenia. The agreement was signed at the Armenian Foreign Ministry by Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan and the Head of the EU delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Vassilis Maragos.

The agreement mainly regulates legal issues.

Hovhannisyan clarified that it is too early to talk about changing the mandate.

“We are talking about strengthening the capabilities. Canada has joined the mission from third parties, and there is interest from other countries as well,” the Deputy FM said.

According to Hovhannisyan, the agreement on the status of the EU mission should contribute to more effective monitoring.

“We are talking about creating facilitated conditions for the monitors, ranging from healthcare to technical issues. It is similar to the authority that diplomats have in every country,” the Deputy FM said.

“We believe that this will enhance safety of people. We also contribute to confidence-building in the region. The EU is committed to establishing peace in the region, and this is one of the tools we have in Armenia,” Ambassador Maragos said in turn.
