The consistent expansion of Russian presence in the strategically important region of southern Armenia meets the long-term interests of both Armenia and Russia and the region as a whole, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in a press briefing on Wednesday.
“Taking into account the traditional tasks that Russian consular offices fulfill abroad, this step is expected to significantly boost trade and investment, scientific, educational, cultural and humanitarian cooperation, as well as establish mutually beneficial ties between this territory and Russian regions. The promotion of the economic agenda between our countries is becoming increasingly important in the EAEU format as well, and this aspect should be taken into account. Altogether, this initiative will serve as a reliable foundation for the dynamic, peaceful, and secure development of the Syunik region.
We commend the diligent efforts of an advanced team of Russian diplomats in creating favorable conditions for establishing the Consulate General. Their multifaceted activity in this region has been positively received by the local population. The details regarding the advance team’s work and the establishment of the Consulate General were thoroughly discussed by the foreign ministers of Russia and Armenia. We anticipate reaching concrete agreements on the terms for opening our consular office by May,” Zakharova concluded.
