Frozen visas and uncertainty: what awaits Armenian citizens

New restrictions imposed by US authorities came into effect on January 21 for citizens of 75 countries, including Armenia. Immigration lawyer Tehmina Avagyan explained the situation in an interview with Alpha News.
According to the lawyer, the restrictions primarily affect immigrant visas, which grant individuals permanent residency rights (Green Cards).
“The issue concerns immigrant visas, which, once obtained, allow people to come to the United States and receive a Green Card. At this time, non-immigrant visas—such as tourist or investment visas—are not affected, and people can still apply for and obtain them as usual,” Avagyan said.
She added that individuals already in the United States with a criminal record or a prior deportation order are considered at risk. Moreover, under the new provisions, a person may be denied entry to the United States even on the basis of pending charges, without a final court ruling.
“For those already in the US awaiting family reunification or other status adjustments, I advise being proactive, reaching out to congressional representatives, and consulting with professionals,” she added.
