Preacher Fethullah Gulen, who was accused of plotting a coup attempt in Turkey in 2016, has died, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the Hurriyet newspaper.
“Fethullah Gulen, the head of FETO, who lived in Pennsylvania, US, died,” it says.
Turkish authorities accused Gulen’s organization of involvement in the attempted coup d’état in July 2016. After the rebellion, more than 80 thousand people were arrested, and about 150 thousand civil servants, including the military, were dismissed. Gulen himself, who was in the United States, condemned the coup attempt and rejected the charges against him.
