After the return of US President Donald Trump to power, the political attitude towards Ukraine has changed dramatically. The US views on the Ukrainian problem are shared by both Hungary and Slovakia. To understand the reason for this approach, Alpha News spoke with the speaker of the Armenian community in the Hungarian government, Nikoghos Hakobyan.
“Even before Donald Trump was elected, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had very good relations with him. He took part in Trump’s election campaign in the US several times, and they share similar approaches to the war in Ukraine. Hungary was initially the only country that did not want to provide Ukraine with any financial or military assistance. It should also be noted that Hungary has very good relations with Russia, imports oil and gas from there and does not want to spoil relations with it,” Hakobyan said.
He also commented on the economic problems caused by the Russian-Ukrainian war.
“The Russian-Ukrainian war has a major economic impact on all European countries. The German economy has not been in such a chaotic state in the last 100 years. Other countries that provided all their financial support to Ukraine ended up in a similar situation. This situation was also influenced by the sanctions imposed on Russia. Today, there are already countries that have realized that Zelensky is not just asking for their support but demanding it,” Hakobyan concluded.
