ICRC visited detained Armenians in Azerbaijan in early November
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) visited Armenians detained by Azerbaijani authorities in early November, Zara Amatuni, ICRC spokesperson in Armenia, told Armenpress.
“We continue to visit all the Armenians who have been arrested in Azerbaijan and whose names have been confirmed by the Azerbaijani authorities. I am talking about the people who have been arrested and are in Azerbaijan since 2020, and as a result of the escalations of 2021 and September 19 of 2023. The visits take place regularly. We give them the opportunity to maintain contact with their families,” Amatuni said.
Amatuni noted that the ICRC visited some of the detainees in Baku in October, and in the early November it visited for the first time the Armenians who were arrested after the September 19 Azerbaijani attack on Artsakh. The ICRC received confirmations about their arrest only recently.
According to Amatuni, the visits take place in the form of private meetings. The ICRC focuses on the health and detention conditions of the detainees. The conditions are observed through both private meetings and visits to all possible areas.
“The purpose of the visits is for us to be able to see what conditions they are in, what they need, and to properly address these needs if possible. We do not talk about this publicly. This allows us to more openly discuss these issues with the relevant authorities who are responsible for these persons,” Amatuni said.
