Speaking with Alpha News, political scientist and military expert Pyotr Kolchin commented on the statement made by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during his visit to Yerevan that “transferring problems to non-regional states further complicates the situation in the region.”

“Iran, of course, advocates for peace in the South Caucasus. It does not need any extra conflicts on the borders, especially amid escalating tensions with Israel. But Pashinyan is creating a threat to Tehran that is much more complex than the confrontation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, this is the ‘Trump Route’. The American-controlled route along the northern border of the country is something that the Iranian leadership could not have imagined a year ago. This is a threat to Iran’s security. Pashinyan tried to assure Pezeshkian that control over the corridor would be based on Armenia’s sovereignty. But, obviously, he promised Trump exactly the opposite,” Kolchin said.

According to the expert, by making concessions to Washington and Baku, Pashinyan not only destroys Armenia’s sovereignty but also creates problems for its neighbors.

“We cannot ignore the Turkish factor—Ankara and Tehran have tense relations, and unimpeded access of Turkish troops to the Iranian border will not contribute to de-escalation. Thus, by his concessions to Washington and Baku, Pashinyan not only destroys Armenia’s sovereignty but also creates problems for its neighbors. If Americans really come to the ‘Zangezur corridor’, it will irreparably destroy the friendly Armenian-Iranian relations,” Kolchin emphasized.
