Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist and Middle East expert Oleg Makarenko commented on the situation in the Middle East, where Iran has put its armed forces on full combat alert.

“Iran’s heightened combat readiness is a response to the actions of the United States, which is strengthening the armed forces in this region and intensifying strikes against the Houthis. Iran is now trying to de-escalate tensions, prevent the United States from escalating further, or demonstrate its readiness to strike US bases in the region. This includes strikes carried out by U.S. ally countries such as Bahrain, the UAE, and Turkey. The Iranian state and its armed forces are capable of targeting these territories, including Israel. But will there be a war?

Most likely not, as the US is in a vulnerable position compared to Iran. All locations and all bases with American servicemen, such as those in Syria, could be destroyed by Iran and its armed forces without any possibility of retaliation. Therefore, the Americans do not need additional losses. They are acting from a position of strength to compel Iran to negotiate. I believe strikes will not be carried out on Iran’s nuclear facilities or any other facilities,” the expert said.

The expert sees in Trump’s actions an attempt to negotiate with Iran and earn the title of peacemaker.

“The United States’ current goal is to bring Iran to the negotiating table, as the US leader dreams of winning the Nobel Peace Prize for both resolving the Ukrainian issue and addressing nuclear proliferation,” Makarenko emphasized.

According to the orientalist, Americans may tolerate Trump’s economic experiments, but military losses would jeopardize his presidency.

“If there is a strike on Iran, then the economic measures Trump is implementing as part of his domestic policy—which are already facing resistance within the US—combined with the arrival of coffins from military actions, would make Trump’s impeachment a serious and imminent possibility. This would be based on two criteria, not just the economic one, which can still be mitigated. However, the coffins cannot be dismissed as mere accidents,” Makarenko concluded.
