In Iran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) plays a significant role, and its positions are quite influential, political scientist Robert Margaryan said in an interview with Alpha News.

“In our understanding, when the president or the foreign minister makes a statement, it becomes the official position of the state. However, Iran’s decision-making system is somewhat different. Important issues related to foreign relations or diplomacy—strategic issues—are decided at a much higher level than, say, the president, foreign ministry, or government. These decisions are made under the supervision of Iran’s Supreme Leader, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) plays a significant role in that process. Its positions are quite influential.

Following the signing of the declaration in Washington, a strong statement was issued by the advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, declaring that ‘with or without Russia, we will not allow this route to be built through Trump’s initiative.’ Subsequently, statements were also made by Iran’s president and foreign minister. Personally, I did not expect such a strong statement from the president, as they usually express themselves in a more reserved manner,” Margaryan said.

According to the political scientist, the loss of Artsakh has created a serious security problem for Iran.

“During the 44-day war, Iran made a significant mistake by waiting for what we might call a request from Nikol Pashinyan. They hoped Pashinyan would reach out to them, and they would intervene or provide some form of assistance. But Pashinyan never asked for help, and Iran could not do anything. The loss of Artsakh has created a serious security problem for Iran. If we now observe Iran’s analytical landscape, we’ll see that there is a consensus: Iran must not make the same mistake twice. But this won’t involve military intervention. Many in Armenia have the impression that Iran will enter, attack, or take some kind of action—but that’s not how it will unfold. However, being familiar with Iranian diplomacy, I am confident that they will find a way to prevent the ‘Trump Route’ from becoming reality,” Margaryan concluded.
