Iran’s policy towards Armenia is principled and will remain unchanged after the change of power, Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani told journalists, answering the question about one of the presidential candidates of Azerbaijani origin.

He emphasized that Iran remains Armenia’s friend and that relations will continue to develop.

Sobhani also commented on the highway route through Armenia, noting that it is a serious alternative that opens great opportunities for Iran to have access to the Black Sea.

The Ambassador added that the road to the Black Sea basin through Armenia and Georgia is two days shorter compared to the one through Azerbaijan. In this context, he described the construction of the North-South highway project as very important.

Ambassador Sobhani voted on Friday in the second round of the presidential election. Citizens of Iran choose a new president from two candidates: the leader of the first round, reformer and ethnic Azerbaijani Masoud Pezeshkian, and the representative of the conservative wing, Saeed Jalili. Three polling stations have been opened in Armenia: in Yerevan’s Blue Mosque, at the Iranian Embassy, and at the Consulate General in Kapan․

The first round of the election was held on June 28.
