Speaking with Alpha News, political scientist and expert in Middle Eastern conflicts Kirill Semyonov commented on the tensions around Iran.

“In general, Iran is not opposed to the nuclear deal. The question is what other provisions Trump wants to include, besides the issue of peaceful nuclear energy. There is a wide range of issues here. If this concerns the nuclear program directly, then it might be acceptable for Iran, but if it includes some additional provisions, then, of course, it will be unacceptable. I believe Iran, in general, was ready for the nuclear deal. The only question is whether agreement to the nuclear deal will mean automatic lifting of sanctions or it will be an ultimatum—a demand from Iran in exchange for not being bombed. Of course, Iran is unlikely to agree to the second condition,” Semyonov said.

According to the expert, Israel seeks to involve the US in strikes against Iran to destroy it.

“Trump’s policy is that he is ready for a deal with Iran. He is taking these steps, among other things, to reduce tensions and prevent Israeli strikes on Iran. Israel, of course, wants escalation. The problem is not nuclear weapons; Israel wants to involve the US in strikes on Iran, weaken it, and ultimately eliminate it. This is Israel’s goal. Naturally, it cannot do it alone.

Therefore, it is trying to involve the US in this process. The Americans are not prepared for some kind of global war with Iran. Israel understands this, but it wants to get US support in maximizing pressure on Iran. Another thing is that Trump, of course, is not interested in escalation with Iran and would actually like to resolve everything peacefully but at the same time do it in a way that would satisfy Israel. This task is very difficult to solve, but it is still possible,” Semyonov concluded.
