Speaking with Alpha News, Deputy Chair of Russia’s Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Andrey Klimov commented on Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk’s statement that Armenia’s accession to the European Union will close the Eurasian Economic Union market for it.

“This is not the first time Overchuk is talking about this, and it was known from the very beginning, because all our organizations, like the EAEU and others, assume certain internal customs privileges and benefits on the movement of capital, goods, and labor resources. And if people move to another system, then for us they become those without all these privileges, benefits, and so on. Everything is very simple, there is nothing new here.

At one time, this was the reason for the Maidan in Ukraine, because people were indignant about why Ukraine was not joining the EU, where it would not have joined, in fact. You can’t be both here and there. It’s like playing for two football teams that play against each other at the same time in the same match; that is, the same player plays both here and there, but things like that never happen. Or rather, sometimes they do happen, but players are penalized, expelled, fined, suspended, and so on.

It’s not the first time Overchuk has spoken on this subject, and everyone has known it for a long time. You don’t need to study quantum physics for this; it’s elementary. It is impossible to be in opposite economic and legal systems at the same time, it is simply impossible, it doesn’t work. No one has succeeded in doing this and never will,” Klimov said.
