Moscow can see that Armenia is being prepared for entry into the EU, which has become a hostile bloc for Russia. This was stated by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Ovechuk in an interview with TASS, who stressed that the realization of this scenario would have serious consequences.
“What we are observing in the twists and turns surrounding the railway concession [Russia’s concession over Armenia’s railways] fits the political logic of the Armenian leadership’s proclaimed rapprochement with the European Union that is a union experiencing economic decline and transforming into a military-political bloc hostile to Russia,” Ovechuk stated.
He emphasized that “whether Armenians want to become part of a bloc hostile to Russia is a matter for the Armenians themselves.”
“What is obvious to us is that they are being prepared for this, just as the long-term, serious consequences of such a course of events are equally obvious,” the Deputy Head of the Russian Government noted.
