Russian diplomat Kirill Gevorgian, who served as Vice President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), did not manage to secure another term.
This is the first time that Russia’s representative has not been elected as a judge. In parallel and independent voting conducted by secret ballot, the Assembly and the Council re-elected one judge who is currently serving, Hilary Charlesworth of Australia. Four new judges were elected as well.
The ICJ consists of 15 judges; each judge serves a nine-year term. The elections are held every three years, with five seats being introduced. There is no bar on consecutive terms. Judges are elected on the basis of their qualifications, not their nationality. No two judges can be from the same country.
Russian diplomat Kirill Gevorgian has been a member of the ICJ since 2015. In 2021, he was elected Vice President. In 2012-2015, he served as a member of the International Law Commission.
