Members of the European Parliament made a joint statement in response to Azerbaijan’s criticism, negative reaction and threats regarding Armenian-French military cooperation.
The MEPs emphasized that it is the sovereign right of any country to have an army armed with combat and modern military equipment.
They noted that “Azerbaijan’s accusations against Armenia that it provokes conflict in the South Caucasus prove once again that there is a conspiracy that has led to the ethnic cleansing of more than 140,000 Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023.”
“This can in no way be acceptable to the EU. It is time to impose sanctions against Aliyev’s dictatorial regime for its destructive actions undermining regional peace and security, as well as for human rights violations. We strongly condemn Baku’s official statements and call on the European Commission and the European External Action Service to immediately respond to this situation,” the statement said.
The statement was signed by Nathalie Loiseau, François-Xavier Bellamy, Raphaël Glucksmann, Bert-Jan Ruissen, Charlie Weimers, and other MEPs.
