Russia periodically hears unusual statements about supposed “attacks from the north” against Armenia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during talks in Moscow with the Speaker of Armenia’s National Assembly, Alen Simonyan.

“It is somewhat strange for us to hear recurring statements that some mythical attacks from the north are being prepared against Armenia, or about an existential threat from the Collective Security Treaty Organization. You are beginning a campaign in preparation for parliamentary elections. I can assure you that when signals come from abroad suggesting that someone intends to interfere—with an obvious hint at Russia—and when appeals are made from Yerevan to the EU saying, ‘help us prevent such interference,’ it seems strange to us,” Lavrov said.

According to him, attempts to cast doubt on the shared history of Russia and Armenia during the Soviet period, including the Great Patriotic War, fall into the same category.
