Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Alexey Anpilogov commented on how the conflict between US and Ukrainian Presidents Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky will affect the South Caucasus region.

“The context of the argument in the Oval Office of the White House is unique not only in its factual content but also because it was the first time in the history of the Oval Office and in America’s bilateral relations with anyone. It was the first time the conversation was so tense and the diplomatic results were so devastating. The Ukrainian delegation was not simply asked to leave, it was literally kicked out of the White House.

And there was no press conference, not even a joint lunch, which was literally handed out by journalists in the corridor, and this is quite indicative and offensive to the diplomatic protocols that are usually applied in such relationships,” Anpilogov said.

According to the expert, the US will be much less involved in resolving local conflicts and Yerevan will be left alone with its own problems.

“As for the change in American policy and the overall impact of the new American policy on international relations, we must understand that Trump is really leading the US out of many old conflicts.

For the Caucasus, the withdrawal of American influence and the reduction of American influence in key regions means that the American embassy in Yerevan, which until now was the largest in the CIS, will most likely be reduced in personnel. America will be much less involved in resolving local conflicts and in advancing the European and Euro-Atlantic agenda than it was under the Biden administration, which interfered in bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, drawing Armenia into the area of NATO and the European Union.

So, of course, this will be a very serious challenge for Armenia’s current leadership. I believe that for Pashinyan, the new American policy will be, at the very least, an unpleasant surprise, because now he is left alone with his problems. Neither the Americans nor the Europeans will certainly solve these problems, leaving Yerevan alone with its own problems,” Anpilogov concluded.
