At the moment, Pashinyan’s government is trying to balance its direction both towards the West and Russia, political scientist Ara Poghosyan told Alpha News.
“There is a misconception that Yerevan has changed its foreign policy. Pashinyan’s government continues its political line, and its fundamental significance is to ensure its external legitimacy at any cost at the expense of its internal legitimacy. At the moment, Pashinyan’s government is trying to balance its direction both towards the West and Russia, but in essence, it maintains a policy oriented towards the West.
In fact, one of the reasons for the softening of Armenian foreign policy at the moment can be associated with the expected political changes taking place in the West, in particular, with the change of possible political players in the United States and France. It means that one’s own political course should be ensured,” the political scientist said.
Poghosyan is confident that the Armenian authorities are trying to create the image of a new external enemy, in addition to Azerbaijan.
“The statements made and the actions taken by the Armenian authorities had two main aspects: domestic and foreign policy. The most important domestic political task that Pashinyan and his team tried to solve was to create the image of Azerbaijan as an external enemy, with the help of which they periodically tried to solve domestic social problems. One of such problems is certain domestic political shifts, during which the Armenian authorities announced that Russia was trying to carry out a coup d’etat in Armenia,” Ara Poghosyan said.
