‘No breakthrough is expected’: German MP on Armenia-Azerbaijan talks in Berlin
Member of Germany’s Bundestag Eugene Schmidt commented to Alpha News on the meeting of the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Berlin.
According to him, no one should rely on Germany.
“I believe that no one should rely on Germany at all. Germany is neither a reliable mediator nor some kind of independent player in the international arena; that is, we can say it is a structure or state completely subordinate to NATO,” Schmidt said.
According to Schmidt, there is an attempt to destabilize the situation and pull Armenia more and more into the sphere of its interests.
“I believe that talks in Berlin are just some movements that are created for the sake of movements. So, no breakthrough is expected. We know that the head of Armenia is very pro-European and anti-Russian, so the fact that the negotiation platform was chosen somewhere in Europe is completely logical. But I don’t expect a breakthrough without the participation of directly bordering states and major players in the region, such as Russia, Iran, and Turkey, or at least some of their mediation. I don’t think the Europeans will achieve anything here.
I believe Germany no longer has any interests of its own. Or rather, these interests exist, but the political leadership does not defend them. Of course, initially, due to gas supplies, Germany had a more pro-Azerbaijani position, but since Armenia is pursuing an anti-Russian policy and there is a Russian base there, this is a difficult question. In any case, there is an attempt to destabilize the situation and pull Armenia more and more into the sphere of its interests,” Schmidt concluded.
