An influential politician who held high-ranking positions in Azerbaijan for 24 years is accused of “treason” and being a “Russian agent.” Last week, a Baku court placed Ramiz Mehdiyev—former head of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration and Secretary of the Security Council—under house arrest for four months. Alpha News spoke with Azerbaijani affairs expert Garnik Davtyan about this matter.

According to the expert, Ramiz Mehdiyev has long occupied key roles within the government and continues to wield considerable influence. The problem, Davtyan noted, stems from those in Azerbaijan who hold pro-Russian views.

“We witnessed attacks on Sputnik and the House of Russian Culture,” he emphasized.

According to Davtyan, there is a clear synchronicity in the actions of the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders. Both have launched an anti-Russian campaign, he says. One of the reasons for this, the expert believes, is the implementation of the Turan project and the desire to diminish Russia’s influence in the South Caucasus.
