Speaking with Alpha News, Viktor Nadein-Raevsky, an Orientalist and Senior Researcher at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, commented on the Armenian Prime Minister’s statement about the need to re-examine the question of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire.
“Pashinyan has been talking such nonsense for a long time. For the first time, he publicly spoke in his newspaper about cursing his ancestors for the fact that their behavior led to genocides, meaning the Armenians’ speech in favor of self-government and so on. Yes, there were Armenian speeches, because the situation in the Ottoman Empire was disgusting for non-Muslims. Christians were suppressed in general along all lines, in all respects. The historical facts are well known. There is a huge amount of documented evidence of the Genocide.
Pashinyan has one crazy idea that if he denies the Genocide, it will be possible to make peace with Turkey, open the borders, actively trade, and, in general, unblock Armenia. He has a negative attitude towards the cores that hold the Armenian nation together. He supports orientation towards the West; he wants to join NATO and the European Union and is not satisfied with the CSTO. He accuses Russia of being to blame for Armenia’s defeat during the Karabakh war. But he himself did not allow his army to cross the border of Karabakh. While the Karabakh army was bleeding, 40,000 Armenian soldiers remained outside Karabakh,” Nadein-Raevsky said.
Turkish society lacks the civic courage to condemn this crime, the expert noted.
“Turkey completely denies the very fact of the Armenian Genocide, although these are completely unfounded and extremely stupid actions. To condemn this crime, civil courage is needed, which is still lacking in modern Turkish society,” Nadein-Raevsky concluded.
