Political observer Hakob Badalyan told Alpha News that he does not view the 7-point declaration following the meeting of the leaders of Armenia, the US and Azerbaijan in Washington as an achievement for Armenia. Moreover, he noted that Yerevan made concessions regarding the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group.
“Obviously, official Yerevan has deviated from the planned option, as it had previously declared its readiness to sign a statement on the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group on the same day when the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace agreement is signed. But the peace agreement has not been signed, it is not even known when it will be. Moreover, after the Washington Declaration, Aliyev said that Armenia needs to ‘do its homework’, needs to change the Constitution, but Yerevan has already signed a statement on the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group,” Badalyan said.
Meanwhile, according to the expert, the Washington agreement is a political achievement for Pashinyan and his ruling party.
“Pashinyan now has a document he can present as a peace achievement in the run-up to the 2026 elections. In this sense, of course, Nikol Pashinyan has a certain achievement. Let me remind you that during the diplomatic forum in Antalya, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated almost directly that the Armenian public supports their efforts on the peace agenda, but if they do not yield any results, public opinion can shift. I believe the Pashinyan government has received a certain international carte blanche in Washington ahead of the 2026 elections,” the political observer noted.
