Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recently posted a statement on his Facebook page describing the possible consequences if his hold on power is not maintained. According to Pashinyan, rejecting a secured peace means opening the door to war. Alpha News discussed this topic with political commentator Hakob Badalyan.

“Nikol Pashinyan’s latest statement is a blackmail of society. When a person says: either I stay in power or there will be war, it is hard to call it anything other than blackmail. We can see that whereas Armenia previously faced direct blackmail from Azerbaijan, that role now appears to have been taken over by the Armenian authorities, who are blackmailing their own people,” Badalyan noted.

According to him, peace is always conditioned by strength – if you are not strong, you cannot have guaranteed peace.

“Unfortunately, this is exactly the kind of peace we have right now. And if you follow the process closely, it becomes clear that this peace took shape as a result of shifting international conditions – not because anything changed in the Armenian-Azerbaijani process itself, but because the broader environment and the relations between major powers changed: Russia and the United States moved from a logic of confrontation to a logic of dialogue and deal-making. At that moment, the situation as a whole entered a state of peace, and we found ourselves under the influence of the existing macro-environment,” Badalyan concluded.
