Pashinyan’s political weakness will push Armenia toward geopolitical catastrophe – Pyotr Kolchin
Speaking with Alpha News, political scientist and military expert Pyotr Kolchin commented on the news that US President Donald Trump once again stated that “it is an honor for him to help resolve the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”
“Trump’s goals are simple: he wants to add another achievement to his list of great diplomatic victories, which, in his opinion, will lead to a Nobel Peace Prize. To achieve this, he’s seeking results at any cost, and preferably as soon as possible. Aliyev is taking full advantage of this, achieving all his goals and asserting his influence in the South Caucasus. But talking about any real progress in a settlement is, of course, impossible. Trump is creating an image; he is trying to pressure Iran by creating risks on its northern borders. But no real resolution is underway. Azerbaijan is not abandoning its militaristic aspirations; the country’s military budget is increasing for next year. Aliyev is not abandoning the ‘Western Azerbaijan’ projects. And the ‘Trump route’ itself will likely be under the effective control of Ankara and Baku. Therefore, talking about any real peace here is out of the question,” Kolchin said.
According to the expert, unless current political dynamics are reversed, Armenia may soon face serious security threats.
“Pashinyan’s political weakness is pushing Armenia to the brink of geopolitical catastrophe. And if these processes aren’t reversed in time, the country could face very serious security problems that could have a devastating impact on its sovereignty in the strategic perspective,” Kolchin concluded.
