Peter Stano: Armenia can apply for EU membership

Armenia can apply for membership in the European Union (EU), Peter Stano, the European Commission’s lead spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, told the Russian Izvestia newspaper.

Countries have the right to strive for a better future for their people. They are free to decide how to ensure such a future. Each European country—its people and government—must decide whether it wants to apply for EU membership, he said when asked whether the EU’s doors are open to Armenia.

Stano noted that as soon as a country applies for EU membership, it is discussed by the member states, and then they make a respective decision based on the EU treaties and established standards.

On March 13, the European Parliament adopted a resolution considering the possibility of granting Armenia the status of a candidate for EU membership.
