Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II expressed condolences on the passing of Pope Francis.

“Pope Francis was a humble, courageous and good pastor who faithfully followed in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ. He assumed a high and responsible papal mission in difficult times, constantly defending justice and peace, giving special attention and care to those in need, and making his important contribution to the strengthening of interchurch relations…. We recall with special consolation that His Holiness the Pope has constantly offered his prayers for the world afflicted by wars and injustice, particularly for our people suffering from the severe consequences of the Artsakh war,” the Catholicos’ message reads.

Karekin II noted that the Armenian people will remember with gratitude the sacred liturgy served at St. Peter’s Cathedral in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the proclamation of St. Grigor Narekatsi as the Vardapet of the Universal Church, as well as the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to Armenia.
