President of European Parliament says EU should not buy gas from Azerbaijan

The European Union should not buy gas from Azerbaijan, because the latter has become an unreliable partner after its military actions in Artsakh, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola said on the sidelines of the informal EU summit in Granada.
“We cannot move from one unreliable energy partner to another. This is our position,” she said.
It should be noted that POLITICO has previously reported that the EU is unlikely to impose sanctions against Azerbaijan, since Europe depends on natural gas supplies from Baku.
According to POLITICO, while European politicians are often willing to take Armenia’s side in symbolic appeals and expressions of concern, Azerbaijan has established more hard power, not least because the EU is increasingly turning to Caspian Sea gas as an alternative to Russia after the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Despite a few tepid messages of concern from senior EU figures, the growing crisis is forcing Brussels to choose between its self-proclaimed values and the benefits of partnership with Azerbaijan,” the article says.
