To mark Artsakh Independence Day, President Samvel Shahramanyan and Primate of the Artsakh Diocese, Bishop Vrtanes Abrahamyan, visited the Yerablur Military Pantheon and laid wreaths at the graves of fallen soldiers.
“The most essential guarantee of the unification of the Artsakh people is the state. The blood shed by our heroes is at the core of our statehood. We have no moral right to question the existence of statehood in Artsakh,” the Bishop said.
On September 2, 1991, a declaration on the proclamation of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and the formation of its provisional bodies of state power and administration was adopted at the joint session of the Council of People’s Deputies of the Nagorno-Karabakh Regional Council, Shahumyan Regional Council, and councils of all levels. On December 10, 1991, Nagorno-Karabakh held an independence referendum, with 99.89% of the population of Artsakh voting for independence. In December 1991, the people of Artsakh took part in the elections of deputies to the Supreme Council of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. The supreme legislative body of the republic, the Supreme Council, was formed. In January 1992, the first session of the Supreme Council of the Republic was held, where the declaration of independence was adopted.
