Armenia as one big blockaded Lachin corridor

February 16 2024, 13:45

“Azerbaijan’s failure to fulfill its international obligations resulted in this crisis,” Nikol Pashinyan said.

“We emphasize the need to use international mechanisms to ensure the rights and security of Armenians, and we will soon start consultations with international partners,” the Armenian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“Azerbaijan seeks to involve Armenia in a large-scale war,” Pashinyan said.

“Azerbaijan is preparing to organize ethnic cleansing,” Nikol Pashinyan’s quote again.
It may seem to you that these statements were made by Nikol Pashinyan and the Armenian Foreign Ministry after the February 13 events in the Armenian village of Nerkin Hand, as a result of which four Armenian soldiers were killed.

However, these are statements made by officials after Azerbaijan blocked passage through the Lachin corridor on December 12, 2022.
As for the reaction of the Armenian authorities to the above-mentioned clashes in the Syunik region, Nikol Pashinyan gave a large speech about this incident during today’s meeting of the Armenian government.

He said: “Azerbaijan seems to avoid this option (border delimitation – ed.), and our analysis shows that there may be one reason for this. This reason may be, for example, the beginning of hostilities on some sections of the border with the prospect of escalating the military conflict into a full-scale war against the Republic of Armenia. This intention is shown in all statements and actions of official Baku.”

As you can see, the scenario is unchanged. Pashinyan makes statements identical to those he made in 2022 and 2023, commenting on the blockade of the Lachin corridor. However, now Pashinyan’s comments concern the Republic of Armenia directly.

Among other things, commenting on the situation with the blockade of the Lachin corridor, Pashinyan also stated that he believes it is for Stepanakert and Baku to conduct direct talks on the rights and security of the population of Nagorno-Karabakh. After the forced exodus of Armenians from Artsakh, the Armenian authorities, both personally and through the media, stated that “the cause of the Artsakh tragedy was that the Artsakh authorities refused direct talks with Azerbaijan.”
Have you noticed that the Armenian authorities offer the citizens a direct dialogue with official Baku? And by doing so, they lay a mine under Armenian statehood.

It should have become obvious to the vast majority of the citizens that the initiator of the constitutional referendum in Armenia is Ilham Aliyev himself. This referendum is a direct dialogue between the Armenian people and Aliyev. In this case, Pashinyan is just an intermediary, or, as he likes to call himself, a moderator.

A moderator who understands perfectly well that the very fact of holding a referendum is a countdown for Armenia. If the draft of the new Constitution submitted to the referendum is approved, then Armenia will turn into a “geopolitical orphan”. It will become easy prey for Turkey and Azerbaijan.
If the project is rejected, it is already obvious that Azerbaijan will interpret this as revanchist sentiments in Armenia and will try to resolve the issue of Armenian statehood the way it did with Artsakh in 2023.

Nikol Pashinyan understands all this. His further statements on the problems on the line of contact between the troops of Armenia and Azerbaijan will not differ from what he said during the blockade of the Lachin corridor… And the consequences will be the same.
