As part of “The People Speak” project, Alpha News conducted surveys in Yerevan and Armenian communities in the US and Russia to learn citizens’ views on pressing issues.
Responding to a question about Armenian-Turkish relations, one citizen noted that relations can be maintained, but certain boundaries must not be crossed.
“As far as I know and have heard, you cannot be friends with Turks. You can maintain relations, but you cannot cross certain boundaries. History has repeatedly shown that true friendship with Turks is impossible,” said the respondent.
Another respondent said that dialogue with Turks is possible, but not in the format currently pursued in Armenia.
“The Turks have always questioned our origins, so I don’t understand why we should treat them as friends. Yes, we can pursue politics and dialogue—we are not primitive people. But in the format in which it is currently conducted in Armenia, I disagree, because in my opinion, it is one-sided concessions,” he noted.
One survey participant emphasized that negotiations with Turkey are only possible if Turkey recognizes the Armenian Genocide.
“We need a patriotic Armenian who will think first and foremost about the people and strive to do everything for the country, regardless of external political or other interests. Such a person must advance Armenia’s interests, be truly patriotic, and resist external enemies,” said the citizen.
On the issue of Armenia’s security, citizens stressed that the country needs patriots who will promote the republic’s interests.
“I believe Armenia is unsafe even now, especially in the context of relations with neighbors. Tensions in our region will persist, and attempts to make one-sided concessions for the sake of security, in my opinion, are not the right policy. This will lead to even greater tension and escalation in 10–15 years. Therefore, such an approach cannot be called farsighted,” one respondent said.
