Even Trump joins the camp of the winners, while Armenia self-eliminates

On February 27, it became known that the delimitation in the Tavush region, according to Sputnik Armenia, will continue along the 1978 border. In comparison with 1976, the Armenian SSR has lost several square kilometers of territory. The source notes that as a result of the change in the route of the border, significantly more territory passed to the Azerbaijani SSR than to the Armenian SSR. According to rough estimates, the Armenian SSR lost about 5.8 square kilometers. Now it is the Republic of Armenia that is about to lose these 5.8 square kilometers.

Here we should stop and note the following: Back in August 2021, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in an interview with CNN Turk that Baku had offered Yerevan to sign a peace agreement, specifying that it would be about the recognition of the territorial integrity of both states and the final establishment of borders. At the same time, in 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a specific proposal on the delimitation of borders. He said, “The most important thing now is to finally resolve the situation on the border, and here, of course, nothing can be done without Russia’s participation. Maps that show how the border between the Union republics passed during the Soviet period are in the general staff of the Russian army. There are things there that also require mutual compromises: somewhere to align something, somewhere to exchange something. But this should be recognized, it is clear that it is beneficial for both sides. Is it possible to do this? It is.”

At the same time, the issues of the so-called enclaves began to be actively discussed, and the Armenian side had arguments for negotiations. Armenia has repeatedly stated (at least at the level of experts and various political figures) that the history of the enclaves as a whole shows that their territories were both part of the First Armenian Republic and part of Soviet Armenia. However, later they were artificially separated and given to Azerbaijan (in the period from 1927 to 1936). In other words, based on Putin’s statements and the experience of demarcation in the 1920s and 1930s, it was possible for official Yerevan to get the most out of the prevailing conditions and, for example, not to surrender Voskepar to the enemy, as the interstate road to Georgia passes through it. The loss of control over this territory would jeopardize the physical existence of the gas pipeline from Georgia to Armenia running along the Red Bridge–Sevkar–Berd line.

However, Pashinyan refused Putin’s proposals and, from the very beginning of 2022, began working on shifting talks on the delimitation and fate of Artsakh to a Western negotiating platform. This was certainly helped by Russia’s war against Ukraine. Pashinyan decided that this was the best time to reset all agreements with Moscow.
But something did not go according to plan, and more specifically, Russia not only did not lose the war but is also on its way to implementing the set of demands that Moscow put forward in December 2021. This would not have happened if Russian soldiers had lost on the battlefield. But the soldiers won. US President Donald Trump understands this as well. After all, what is Trump essentially doing? Seeing the obvious outcome of the war, he is trying to join the camp of the victors, that is, Russia and those who helped Moscow these 3 years.
A major fiasco awaits Armenia, and it’s clearly not going to be limited to just 5.8 square kilometers in Tavush…

Think about it…
