As part of “The People Speak” project, Alpha News conducted surveys in Yerevan and Armenian-populated communities in the United States and Russia to determine citizens’ opinions on the most pressing issues of the day.
During the survey, citizens commented on the authorities’ stance regarding building relations with Turkey, noting that friendship with Turks is impossible, since they have always sought to destroy Armenians. “In our case, there can be no talk of friendship,” said one respondent.
Another respondent noted that at this stage it is important to arm, since today the Armenian army is very weak.
“We need to become strong, like Israel. What kind of security can we talk about if we are so weakened now?” said another participant.
Survey participants emphasized that the Armenian people have always wanted to see a pro-Armenian leader in power, such as Karen Demirchyan and Vazgen Sargsyan.
Citizens also noted that the government should serve the nation, not force the nation to serve its own interests. Speaking about the authorities’ campaign against the Armenian Apostolic Church, one respondent remarked: “This is an undesirable phenomenon. We have always been proud of being the first Christian nation. This does not suit us.”
“A person like Samvel Karapetyan, who has reached such heights, should not have interfered in this matter. He should have helped in another way, as he himself says, ‘in his own way,'” said another respondent.
