After the phone call between the presidents of the United States and Russia on February 12 and the publication of its details, a surge was registered in the stock markets. Of course, the Russian stocks reacted the most.
Following the phone call, the MOEX Russia Index rose by 5%. Later on February 13, it became known that due to the influx of investors, the stock market temporarily suspended operations. By the way, the organizations with registered growth that day were those that were directly hit by sanctions.
The Russian ruble also strengthened against the dollar, although it should be noted that the ruble, due to several other factors, has strengthened by about 14% against the dollar since the beginning of the year. However, the phone conversation gave it a new boost.
The reaction of the world markets is also quite interesting. Asian indices mostly recorded growth, while American indices fell. This is understandable, since in any case we are talking about competing markets. The most interesting thing is the positive reaction of the European markets, although there was an ambiguous political attitude towards the phone call. This demonstrates the European economic community’s fatigue from the conflict.
Oil prices also declined amid a possible easing of sanctions against Russia.
