Why is the French Ambassador to Armenia lying?

February 25 2025, 12:50

One of the key characteristics of politicians in the era of the decline of globalism is their unwillingness and inability to take responsibility: having a high salary and enjoying the benefits provided by the state is good, but being responsible for the decisions made is no longer for them. Olivier Decottignies, the French Ambassador to Armenia, is a classic example.

In an interview with Radiolur, French Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Armenia Olivier Decottignies touched upon a number of topics related to Armenian-French relations, as well as the fall of Artsakh, noting that Karabakh was recognized as part of Azerbaijan not on October 6, 2022 in Prague, during the Pashinyan-Macron-Michel-Aliyev meeting, but in 1991, when Armenia signed the Alma Ata Declaration.

We could have said that Decottignies’ statement repeats the theses of pro-government propaganda, but this is the wrong approach, and it is necessary to reveal the details, the subtext of the ambassador’s statements and give them a political assessment. If since 1991, based on the fact that Armenia signed the Alma Ata Declaration, Armenia recognized Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan, then what has France been doing for 30 years as one of the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group? What did France and its diplomatic corps negotiate about? Mr. Ambassador should publish all the proposals that have come from the official Paris over the years. May he be so kind as to show in which document Paris referred to the Alma Ata Declaration before October 2022. At least one mention of this declaration.

The Ambassador also commented on Armenia’s relations with Russia, noting that, in his opinion, in recent years, whenever Armenia needed Russia, Russia was not next to it. We would like to understand how many minutes the Armenian ambassador to France would have lasted in the country if he had stated today that “today the people of Ukraine need peace, but France and Great Britain are hindering this process by delaying the signing of a peace agreement between Russia and the United States on the Ukrainian crisis.”

Decottignies knows better than we do that an ambassador should not even discuss Armenia’s relations with Azerbaijan and should limit himself to assessing the relations between Yerevan and Paris, Yerevan and Brussels. And the relations of Armenia with the EU, Armenia with France, the Armenian people with European and French officials are such that because of the political positions of Emmanuel Macron and former head of the European Commission Charles Michel, Artsakh has been surrendered to Azerbaijan. Despite any statements by the French ambassador, it was October 6, 2022, that became fatal for the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

The ambassador, of course, is trying to absolve President Macron, who, along with Charles Michel, was the “godfather” of the surrender of Artsakh in Prague and the ethnic cleansing that followed the Prague conspiracy. But it would be more honest for the conscience and the people of Artsakh and Armenia if the ambassador said that despite any statements or positions of Macron, Nikol Pashinyan was the leader of Armenia, and in 2022 his personal position proved decisive for Artsakh’s fate. But even for this, the ambassador lacks the political maturity and simple courage.
