We are witnessing the realization of Turkish-Azerbaijani ambitious goals, Turkologist, Dean of YSU Oriental Studies Department Ruben Melkonyan told Alpha News.
“We can see that Turkiye and Azerbaijan openly interfere in the internal affairs of Armenia, encroach on the territorial integrity of Armenia. The term ‘corridor’ have become mundane in political rhetoric, and it differs from what is written in the November 9 agreement.
Corridor is another thing. Just as they use the term Nagorno-Karabakh instead of Artsakh, they try to use the term corridor. We are witnessing the realization of Turkish-Azerbaijani ambitious goals. Azerbaijan is not alone, as it was said in the infamous song: ‘You are not alone, not alone, not alone…’ (song of the “2018 revolution” – ed.),” Melkonyan said.
According to the Turkologist, the so-called “Zangezur Corridor” is the hundred-year Turkish dream.
“That process started in the 1920s, and did not reach a conclusion thanks to Garegin Nzhdeh’s defense.
Syunik is not only a regional but also a geopolitical issue,” Melkonyan said.
He mentioned that years ago the Turkish presence in Artsakh lasted for a short time. According to him, if history repeats itself, today’s presence of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Artsakh will again be short-lived.
“100 years ago, the Turkish presence in Artsakh lasted for a short time. We remember the efforts of Enver Pasha and his brother to stay there. Turkiye’s long-standing goal was to enter the South Caucasus. It did not succeed for a long time, but now it has succeeded.
But the South Caucasus is too small for the three big players: Russia, Iran, Turkiye, and it seems that a clash between these superpowers is quite expected.
At the moment, Turkiye is trying to become stronger. Especially after Shushi’s declaration, the Turkish-Azerbaijani military potential and political goals are identical,” Melkonyan concluded.
