Russia is interested in restoring peace in the South Caucasus, CIS Secretary General Sergey Lebedev told NEWS.ru.

According to Lebedev, this topic is discussed at meetings of all levels to understand what measures must be taken to achieve complete peace in the region.

“Russia is extremely interested in restoring peace in the South Caucasus. We are pleased that both sides are now moving in this direction. The statements by the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan show their intentions to achieve complete peace,” he said.

The CIS Secretary General noted that the efforts to ease tension and restore peace in the South Caucasus are fully supported by all members of the Commonwealth. However, the consent of official Yerevan and Baku is also required.

“The state of war is an unnatural state. The natural state is the state of peace, good neighborly relationships, and cooperation. It is necessary to bring this natural state back to the South Caucasus. We strongly hope that the recent statements about the intention to establish complete peace and the possible signing of a peace treaty will come to fruition. We will only be happy,” Lebedev emphasized.
