The Russian Embassy in Armenia has issued a statement presenting Russia’s position on the Armenian Genocide.
“On April 14, 1995, the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, based on irrefutable historical evidence of the extermination of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire during the early 20th century, adopted a statement titled ‘On Condemnation of the Genocide of the Armenian People in 1915-1922.’ The statement condemned the organizers of this inhumane act, expressed sympathy with the Armenian people and recognized April 24 as the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Genocide. The document noted that the physical annihilation of the brotherly Armenian people in their historical homeland was committed to create conditions for the further destruction of the Russian Empire.
It is worth recalling that in 1915, at the initiative of Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Sazonov, Russia, France, and Great Britain issued a joint statement categorizing the actions of the Ottoman Empire against the Armenian people as a ‘crime against humanity.’
On April 24, 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the commemoration ceremony for the victims of the Armenian Genocide at the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex. In his speech, the head of the Russian state stated that the events of 1915 shook the whole world, but in Russia, they were felt as a shared tragedy. He emphasized that hundreds of thousands of defenseless and homeless Armenians found refuge within the Russian Empire,” the statement concludes.
