The Russian military contingent continues to perform tasks in Transcaucasia as a guarantor of the possibility of a peaceful life and returning residents to the region, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov said at a briefing on Thursday.
“The situation in Transcaucasia remains tense, but it has a steady tendency to stabilize. In September of this year, thanks to the mediation of Russian peacekeepers, it was possible to achieve a ceasefire within a day,” he said.
According to Gerasimov, during hostilities, Russian peacekeepers ensured the accommodation of more than 10 thousand people in the places of their deployment and, subsequently, the safe departure of almost the entire population of Artsakh to Armenia. He added that the peacekeepers’ air transport brought almost 300 injured persons to hospitals.
“Russia is working purposefully on the political track to unblock transport communications in Transcaucasia, ensure a peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan, as well as resolve the most acute Armenian-Azerbaijani contradictions,” the Chief of the General Staff stressed.
