Russian tennis player Elina Avanesyan to compete under Armenian flag

Russian tennis player of Armenian descent Elina Avanesyan, No. 78 in the WTA tennis rankings, will compete under the Armenian flag.
“Elina Avanesyan will compete under the Armenian flag, but there is nothing official yet. We are waiting for her to get the citizenship of the Republic of Armenia so that everything will be official,” Karen Giloyan, the Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, told Armenpress.
Elina Avanesyan was born in 2002 in Pyatigorsk, Russia. In February 2024, her highest WTA ranking was 60th.
She reached the 4th round at the French Open, which ended a few days ago.
