Samvel Karapetyan’s case lacks foundations of law and legality – Aram Vardevanyan

At today’s press conference, lawyer Aram Vardevanyan emphasized that the case against businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan has no legal basis and is entirely driven by political motives.

He drew a distinction between the legal and political spheres, insisting that law and justice are absent in this case.

“Lawyers and attorneys always rely on law and legality, but here those foundations do not exist; in this case, they are missing. What is clearly present is political persecution,” Vardevanyan said.

According to the lawyer, since June 17, 2025—when the “foundations of Facebook justice” were laid—the fundamental principles of a legal state have collapsed in Armenia.

“A high-ranking official was obliged to ensure the supremacy of law, not its violation or interference in the judicial system,” he added.

Vardevanyan also noted that the prosecutor and the investigator are acting jointly, which should not be the case, since the prosecutor is supposed to oversee the investigator.

“By acting together, they cannot present a single argument as to why Samvel Karapetyan should be detained, yet Samvel Karapetyan remains under arrest,” he said.
