Sevak Belyan: Canada continues to insist that the Artsakh conflict is not over
The Armenian National Committee of Canada often discusses the Artsakh cause with the Canadian Foreign Ministry, Sevak Belyan, Member of the Canadian ARF-D and Armenian National Committee, told Alpha News.
“The Armenian National Committee of Canada often holds meetings with the Canadian Foreign Ministry. Recently, the minister hosted a new meeting, which was also attended by members of the committee. During the meetings, many issues are being discussed, but the discussions mainly concern the Artsakh cause, the Armenians of Artsakh, and the current situation in Armenia. Over the past two months, we have met with the minister and emphasized that we would not like Canada to give in to Azerbaijan’s claims that the Artsakh issue is resolved and closed, because it is not,” Belyan said.
According to him, Canada calls on the Armenian authorities to protect the rights of the Armenians of Artsakh, since they have the right to self-determination.
“Today, thanks to our consistency, Canada is one of the few states that continues to note in its official statements that the Artsakh conflict is not over. Canada sent a clear signal that the political settlement of the issue was not negotiated.
We see the United States or other influential countries declaring that they are against military force, but these are just words, and they do not impose sanctions. True, Canada also did not introduce sanctions in this regard but made a clear statement, sending a message to both Azerbaijan and Armenia. Canada calls on the Armenian authorities to raise their voice and protect the rights of the Artsakh people. The people of Artsakh have the right to self-determination, which, unfortunately, was taken away from them,” Belyan concluded.
