Situation in Syria remains difficult, military expert says
Speaking with Alpha News, military expert Yuri Lyamin commented on the situation in Syria and noted that the situation in Syria remains quite difficult.
“They managed to avoid the worst-case scenario, with the collapse of the entire defense, but the situation is still quite difficult. The militants managed to capture a significant part. They now control almost the entire province of Aleppo. They continue to try to break through further; the fighting is taking place in the northern province of Hama. It is very important for the Syrian government forces to hold the city of Hama now since it is of key importance.
If they manage to hold the Hama city, pushing the militants back to Idlib, it will be possible to begin to restore everything, to begin a further counteroffensive, but for now the enemy is very actively putting pressure on Hama; that is why the situation remains so difficult,” Lyamin said.
If the militants are stopped now, their offensive will completely fizzle out, the expert noted.
“Even if Iran has started sending reinforcements and so on, it will take time for these reinforcements to arrive there. It is not that simple. All this is not done instantly. So now the key point is how much the situation will stabilize in the coming days. If the enemy, if the militants, are stopped now, that is, their offensive, roughly speaking, completely fizzles out, in the foreseeable future it will already be possible to talk about the possibility of a fairly active counteroffensive.
The key is to prevent further rapid breakthroughs; the militants managed to simply collapse the front in Aleppo in a very short time. Because of this, the situation there has gone according to a difficult scenario, from which they simply need to get out,” Lyamin concluded.
