There are key contradictions between RA and Turkey: Konstantin Tasits on the possibility of opening the Armenian-Turkish border
Russian political scientist, expert on the South Caucasus Konstantin Tasits commented to Alpha News on the possible opening of the border between Armenia and Turkey.
In his opinion, Ankara is coordinating its steps in connection with the Armenian-Azerbaijani agenda, which, in turn, does not suit official Yerevan.
“We see that there were agreements to open the border to third countries and to holders of diplomatic passports. And they were achieved, if I’m not mistaken, back in 2022 or even earlier. But since that moment, no practical actions have been taken other than the Armenian side modernizing the border crossing. Here, it seems to me, the key contradiction is that Armenia advocates for the normalization process to take place independently, while Turkey coordinates its actions with Azerbaijan.
And, most likely, there are some unspoken agreements that Turkey will make some progress on the issue of opening communications and restoring diplomatic relations only after there is tangible progress in the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement,” the political scientist said.
According to him, significant contradictions between the parties also remain on this issue. “And although there are certain movements, it is not very clear how these interchanges will be found, and during what time this will happen,” Tasits concluded.
