Speaking with Alpha News, international affairs expert Grigor Balasanyan commented on Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s participation in the Board of Peace initiated by US President Donald Trump and the geopolitical developments in Davos. Balasanyan believes that Armenia’s membership in such structures is more of a “show” than a real security guarantee.

Discussing the prospects of joining the Board of Peace, which Trump views as an alternative to the UN, the expert noted that Armenia is rushing to become part of alliances that could complicate its relations with other powers.

“Armenia rushed to join the International Religious Freedom Alliance, which, in essence, gave us nothing but complicated relations with China. And now—this Board of Peace,” Balasanyan said.

According to him, the Armenian authorities do not miss such opportunities, trying to show that they are diversifying the security system.

Touching on Armenia’s aspirations for European integration, Balasanyan emphasized that Pashinyan’s government lacks clear principles and can abruptly shift its political direction.

“No one ever took Armenia’s EU membership seriously. Pashinyan himself says: we’ll integrate as much as we deem necessary. I don’t rule out that one day he’ll declare that we have no place in this ‘pale’ EU,” the expert noted.

Balasanyan also addressed the meeting between the US and Azerbaijani presidents in Davos, where they discussed infrastructure passing through Armenia. He noted that the absence of a meeting with Pashinyan was no coincidence.

“There was simply no topic to discuss with Armenia,” he added.
