The European Union wants to see real, substantive negotiations that will lead to a peace treaty, Toivo Klaar, Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, told the RFE/RL Armenian Service.
According to him, any reports of shootings on the border are alarming.
Klaar said he does not know whether these ceasefire violations are Azerbaijan’s response to the Armenia-EU deepening relations, but noted that the EU wants to see real, substantive negotiations that will lead to a peace treaty, agreements on border delimitation, and the opening of communications.
When asked why it is still not possible to reach a peace agreement, Klaar replied that there could be several reasons for this, but judging by the information he has, he believes that in reality, it should not take so long to achieve a positive result if there is political will and commitment.
He added that the EU wants to work in this direction together with Armenia and Azerbaijan to achieve a positive result.
