International developments point to a redistribution of power on the global political stage that could also impact the South Caucasus. International affairs expert Grigor Balasanyan made this statement in a conversation with Alpha News.

In his view, recent events indicate a certain tension between Donald Trump and European centers.

“We saw a direct conflict between Trump and Brussels, and at this point it seems that Trump either yielded or backed down. I wouldn’t say he lost, as other political calculations are possible,” Balasanyan noted.

Speaking about political developments in Europe, Balasanyan noted that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s defeat was welcomed in some circles, but in his view the issue should be considered in a broader context.

“Some welcome Orbán’s defeat given his political views, but we need to understand whether this is actually to our benefit,” he said.

In the expert’s view, this turn of events may have broader implications tied to the war in Ukraine.

“If this leads to the continuation of the war in Ukraine, then the longer that war drags on, the more dangerous the situation in the South Caucasus may become,” Balasanyan noted.

He also said that the impact of regional developments on Armenia will depend on the political processes ahead.
