‘Trump just wants to win the Nobel Prize’: Evgeny Buzhinsky on possible signing of peace agreement between Yerevan and Baku in US
Speaking with Alpha News, Evgeny Buzhinsky, a retired Russian lieutenant-general and head of the Center for Applied Political and Military Research at Moscow State University, commented on the meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in the United States, as well as Armenia’s chances of joining the European Union.
“Trump probably thinks another conflict needs to be resolved, he regulates all conflicts around the world—apparently, he’s decided he needs a Nobel Prize for this one too. Therefore, the more conflicts he resolves, the more Nobel Prizes he will probably get,” Buzhinsky said.
According to the expert, Pashinyan is seeking friendship with the West.
“Everyone has an interest in Transcaucasia—Russia, the Americans, the Turks, the British. And the US has interests everywhere, in any part of the world. I don’t know what they can get from Armenia. The Armenian Prime Minister wants to join the European Union, he probably wants to shut down our base, and then there will be an American one. However, I believe Armenia has no chance of joining the EU—let them try. But we must understand that Pashinyan is following the same path as Ukraine, and I think the outcome will be similar, only without us.
Given Armenia’s small population, maybe the EU will support it for maintenance purposes, but the EU doesn’t have significant interest in Armenia beyond geopolitical considerations,” Buzhinsky said.
According to the expert, it is impossible to be in the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union at the same time.
“This is absolutely impossible, because these are mutually exclusive options. This is the Ukrainian option, they were also going to sign an association agreement and simultaneously be in the Customs Union and the EU, but it didn’t work out,” Buzhinsky concluded.
