Speaking with Alpha News, political commentator Andrey Perla commented on negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. According to him, Trump clearly understands that the situation amounts to Russia’s victory in the war and that the strength lies on Russia’s side.

“Of course, I may sound overly optimistic, but it seems to me now that Trump will gradually push through—not only with the Ukrainian leadership but also with his so‑called European allies—forcing them to accept that Russia has won the war. Trump clearly understands that this is about Russia’s victory in the war, that the strength is on our side. He clearly sees that, for him as US president, it is far more advantageous to engage with Russia as an equal economic partner than to fight with Ukraine’s extremely uncertain—to put it mildly—future. He will achieve his goal if we assume that his aim is to end the fighting in Ukraine and establish some form of normal relations with Russia. But it must be understood that the further Trump moves toward this goal, the deeper the rift and the sharper the contradictions between Trump and his European allies,” Perla said.

According to the expert, a victorious conclusion of the fighting for Russia will lead to growing contradictions between the US and the EU.

“Just today, former EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stated that the US has already declared war on Europe, and that what the US expects from Europe is completely unacceptable for Europeans. According to Borrell, this unacceptable position should provoke a collective response from Europe—the EU as a whole—rather than discussions about the sovereignty of individual states. Trump, however, seeks engagement with France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and so on—as separate countries. But the EU wants to act as one. This contradiction—this clash over the future—is what will become the main consequence of a victorious conclusion to the fighting for Russia,” Perla concluded.
